Website Design Competition for High School Girls
The Michigan Council of Women in Technology
Foundation is excited to announce its 9th annual MCWTFoundation Website Design Competition for
high school girls in Michigan!
High school girls in Michigan are
challenged to create a website addressing this year’s theme, "Repurposing:
The ultimate in creativity and recycling." It is open ended
enough to encourage creativity, thoughtfulness, and a little research.
Student teams can be individuals or groups
of two. MCWT Foundation will award monetary prizes, ranging from $50 to $750. Girls
may enroll in one of two categories: Beginner or Advanced.
Free optional instruction will be offered
in two locations on different Saturdays.
The application deadline is fast
approaching: October 1, 2014. The deadline
to upload the design entries is November 12, 2014. Winners will be judged not
only on the technology used, but also on their creativity and innovation.
Recent winners and finalists have been from
Lake Shore HS, Utica Stevenson HS, Ferndale University HS, Salem HS, Mercy HS,
Warren Fitzgerald HS, Livonia Franklin, Canton HS, UAIS, Lakeview HS,
Farmington HS, Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology, Centerline HS,
International Academy, Ingham County Computer Science Academy, and many others.
MISSION: The MCWT Foundation
is dedicated to inspiring and assisting girls and women in Michigan to pursue
technology education and careers. To that end, the Foundation fosters
technology aspirations among women, of all ages, throughout Southeastern
Michigan to create a sustainable talent pool of women technology leaders
for tomorrow.

TEN80 STEM EXPO
The National STEM League (NSL) is a practice league for future professionals that has recently been named one of four Exemplary and Scalable STEM programs by Change the Equation.
Thanks to sponsorship from the U.S. Army, you are invited to the one-day STEM Expo on
Oct. 23, 2014 at a Venue TBD in Detroit, MI that highlights project-based curriculum from
the NSL and engages high school students and educators in concepts and careers ranging
from race engineering to software+hardware innovation.
STEM Expo attendees are eligible to activate the full sponsorship and bring the NSL to their schools for sustained project-based learning that doesn’t forget the learning! Depending on the challenge you choose, full sponsorship includes up to $4,000 worth of non-consumable materials, STEM curriculum for clubs, camps or courses, training and entry into the 2014-15 National STEM League. Competition is optional. Collaboration and Creativity required!

Grandparents, Grandkids, Grand Valley!
June 24 - 26, 2014
Grandparents and their grandchildren will be sharing a
college experience by attending G3 — Grandparents, Grandkids, Grand Valley — a
summer camp at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) June 24-26, 2014. Families will spend three days and two nights
on campus, sleeping in the living center apartments and eating in the common
dining halls along with college students and others on campus.
During the three day educational camp, children ages 8-12
and their grandparents will attend hands-on learning activities in areas like
art, history, science, mathematics, engineering, technology, and law
enforcement, to name a few. Class sessions will be taught by Grand Valley
faculty and held during the day in the campus academic buildings. In the
evening, families can choose from a variety of activities including swimming,
playing volleyball, using the climbing wall, and playing games.
G3 is sponsored by GVSU’s Regional Math and Science Center
and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For more information,

Introduction to the Next Generation Science Standards
Materials now available!
On Tuesday May 28, 2013, over 800 school administrators, science teachers, teacher preparation/certification faculty, and other educational leaders from throughout Michigan gathered for a day-long conference to introduce the proposed Next Generation Science Standards, which are currently pending adoption by the Michigan State Board of Education.
The agenda included:
- An overview of Michigan’s Next Generation Science Standards
- Special presentations by: Stephen Pruitt, Achieve Inc., Joseph Krajcik, CREATE for STEM, Michigan State University, Michigan Department of Education and other educational leaders.
- Interactive breakouts by grade level
- Subject-specific sessions to gain a deeper understanding of the standards

Free PD for MS Math Teachers
Attend a free training for "Enhancing Mathematics Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities: Algebraic Expressions and Equations (Grades 6-8)” this summer!
Beginning in the spring of 2012, the (Mi)2 will offer, in collaboration with the Education Development Center (EDC), facilitator trainings for the professional development course “Enhancing Mathematics Instruction for Students with Learning Difficulties: Algebraic Expressions & Equations (Grades 6-8).” The trainings will take place in Traverse City on July 23-26, 2012 and in the Upper Peninsula on September 10-13, 2012. The research-based course was developed by the EDC through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and adapted for Michigan.

Summer Astronomy Camp for 6th-12th grade students
Do you like to gaze at the stars, moons and planets? Are you interested in photography or science research?
Do you like to meet new people with similar interests?
If you said yes to any of the questions above, then Astronomy Camp may be the right opportunity for you!
Astronomy Camp is an overnight camp where you can work with experienced teachers and researchers to learn about astronomy. There will be guided activities to learn about constellations, sunspots, astrophotography, variable stars and much more! You may also work on individual or small group research projects. University
researchers and local astronomy teachers will provide guidance for completing your project.
At Astronomy Camp, you will use computerized telescopes, a CCD camera, solar filters, computers and other equipment at the Camp McGregor Observatory. Various astronomy experts will be present to make presentations about current research in astronomy.
Like true astronomers, you will work on your projects at night and sleep late during the day.
Astronomy Research Camp is open to students in
grades 6th-12th.
on Crispell Lake, near Jackson.
Dates: 2:00 p.m. 8/13/12 through 12:00 p.m.

The ONR mission of STEM is to: foster an interest in, knowledge of, and study in science, technology, engineering and mathematics nationwide to ensure an educated and well-prepared workforce, which meets the naval and national competitive needs. In support of this mission, the following five goals have been identified:
- Inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. [Grades K-10];
- Engage students in STEM-related hands-on learning activities using Navy content. [Grades 3-12];
- Educate students to be well-prepared for employment in STEM disciplines in the Navy or in supporting academic institutions or the Naval contractor community. [Higher Education]; Employ, retain and develop Naval STEM professionals. [Higher Education, Professional Development, Faculty];
- Collaborate across Naval STEM programs to maximize benefits to participants and the Navy.
